Our Religious Education Subject Leader is: Mrs Holden

INTENT

Here, at Disley Primary School, the aim of Religious Education is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of a range of different religions and worldviews represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Religious Education is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school. At Disley Primary School, Religious Education plays an important role, along with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHCE, in promoting the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our children.

IMPLEMENTATION

Religious Education (RE) is taught through the Cheshire West and Chester (CWAC) Council Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. We teach RE through a 2-year rolling programme to ensure full coverage of the CWAC Syllabus. We teach RE through the implementation of RE days, whereby a whole day is dedicated to the discreet teaching of RE every half-term.

Through the teaching of RE, children learn the essential knowledge of other religions and worldviews, as well as skills and attitudes of critical thinking and empathy. This understanding of others’ views is an essential first step to enabling each pupil to understand, reflect on and develop their own personal view. 

There are no presumptions made as to the religious backgrounds or beliefs and values of the children and the staff.  We value the religious backgrounds and worldviews of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others freely.  All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity, and we value the links which are, and can be made between home, school, and a faith community.  We acknowledge that each religion or worldview studied can contribute to the education of all our pupils.  We promote teaching in Religious Education that stresses open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children. 

IMPACT

Through our RE curriculum, children are given opportunities to recall their knowledge and along with their developing skills answer and discuss challenging questions, as well as comfortably ask their own. Children can use key vocabulary to discuss the role of religion in society. 

Alongside our PSHE policy, RE works to emphasise tolerance, respect and understanding as a significant aspect of the teaching of major world faiths and beliefs, including those without faith, in modern Britain and the world.
